Buffalo, NY’s Well Kept Things Are About To Be Your New Favorite Band

We’ve probably said this a dozen times before, but there is nothing in this life quite like the rush you feel when stumbling upon an undiscovered talent. Be it musician, painter, filmmaker, or something else entirely, there is something about that rush of emotion and excitement that accompanies a new artistic discovery that cannot be matched by pills or everyday living. It’s the kind of high you seek out every day in every place you look, but more often than not cannot find. Hell, it has probably been two months or more since I’ve heard a song that made me feel that way, but over the past week I was introduced to a sound that made my every day spent searching worth the effort.

Buffalo, New York has been a hotbed for talent in recent years. I don’t know if it’s something in the water or that the city’s geographic location is so in the middle of nowhere that those residing within its limits feel they must be creative if they ever want to escape, but the world has Buffalo to thank for everyone from Every Time I Die and Goo Goo Dolls, to Pentimento and I Can See Mountains. Now, or as soon as the group finishes recording their debut EP, we can add Well Kept Things to that ever-growing list with confidence they’ll likely inspire a dozen knock-offs within a year’s time.

Well Kept Things is a five piece band with a unique take on indie rock that can best be described as a more pop punk laden take on I Can See Mountains. Their music is ripe with soaring hooks, crazy lyrics, and a distinct sense of perspective unlike anything else currently proliferating throughout the underground music scene. The songs tell stories as much as they offer catchy escape for those who would rather listen to music than think about what is being played, and it’s in that ability to appeal to a broad audience that the band has found its niche. Their first demo, “Great White North,” offers proof of all this in under three minutes. You can stream and download the song, in full, below:

The lyrics for “Great White North” are as follows:

If I could start at the cusp, and end at the lead
You’re the annual sprouting my affability
I thought I was punk until I had to leave
Room 211 stuffed with hesitancy

Hey prolonged design student
I really wish I had a Canadian accent

So you could talk, and I would listen
And I would talk, just so you can
Hear me say something of amenity
I always thought the fight was fiction
Because I was taught shut up and listen
You’re the finer author anyway

So keep on writing, I’ll keep on reading
Keep on hanging on, I’m hanging on

Talk a little more about your Burchfield interpretation
Your storytelling parallactic creation
I’m listening
I really wish I had a Canadian accent

So you could talk, and I would listen
And I would talk, just so you can
Hear me say something of amenity
I always thought the fight was fiction
Because I was taught shut up and listen
You’re the finer author anyway
I really wish I had a Canadian accent

As I mentioned above, Well Kept Things are currently recording their debut EP, which I believe the band plans to release before the end of 2014. We are going to be following their efforts closely in the months ahead, so make sure you’re following UTG on Twitter in order to guarantee you never miss another headline.
